Does Microcurrent Really Work?
What does Microcurrent do for the face?
I love to say Beauty is an energy, a frequency and certainly—Beauty Is an Inside Job™️
When it comes to age-management the pursuit for the latest ‘it’ treatment is never-ending. Microcurrent facials are one of those innovations to spark a conversation and grab attention and combines science, frequency, energy with nature, health and deliver beauty from the inside out.
Microcurrent has been around for decades, especially in physical therapy, so it is very safe, effective, and targeted. Physical therapists have used microcurrent therapy treatments since the 1970s for pain relief and even facial paralysis conditions, like Bell’s palsy. This beauty treatment uses electricity to promote cell growth in skin. Sounds shocking but the procedure is noninvasive, injection-free, and painless. The extra bonus? They have immediate benefits with absolutely no recovery time.
What Exactly Is Microcurrent?
Simply, a Microcurrent device works by delivering an electrical current to muscles and skin cells. The idea behind this is that the electrical current will build up muscles in the face, lifting and tightening the skin.
In my quest to find resources in skincare that provided high quality microcurrent holistic therapies to offer my clients, I found that not all manufacturers of these type of devices could deliver sustainable results and keep the skin and body safe and truly offer a healing modality. I found the existing equipment on the market to be outdated and cumbersome and could not deliver the results I was looking for. Then I stumbled upon an electrical engineer and biomedical engineer and researcher who developed the Tama Metawave System™️. The treatments I now use is this composite set of waveforms called MetaWave™—they contain the essential frequencies that allow for penetration of biphasic stimulus currents of 10-800 µA (microamps) in the ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) range, which in turn result in a magnetic field strength of 0.1-40 µT (microteslas) around cells. This rejuvenating therapy option focuses on rebalancing cellular activity with four fundamental MetaWave™ modalities (equivalent to a 64-channel device). The intertwining frequencies within each modality speak the body’s own language and trigger chemical reactions at a cellular level.
Don’t confuse this with EMF, with most types of frequency, the electric and magnetic fields are coupled. Because they act as one, they are considered together as an electromagnetic field (EMF). But with ELF, the magnetic field and the electrical field can exist and act independently, so they are often studied separately . Functioning electrical appliances and power lines produce EMF. Even the earth produces small amounts of EMF. Therefore, everyone is exposed to this form of energy. The highest EMF exposure can occur using appliances such as electric blankets, microwave ovens, and hair dryers.
Micro-current is a true collaboration between science, nature, health and beauty
The unique cellular technology channels four distinct MetaWave™ modalities. The intertwining frequencies within each modality speak to the body’s own natural electrical and magnetic currents. The modalities trigger chemical reactions at a cellular level without affecting the extracellular matrix architecture for optimal clinical results. These MetaWave™ frequencies and waveforms are designed such that this bio-electromagnetic current penetrates at various depths into the skin tissue. Some of the current is dispersed in the dermal layer, while others reach the subcutaneous and muscle layers.
By using myofascial massage, which releases adhesions which is essentially, stuck fascia along with microcurrent we aid the skin to drain toxins, stagnant fluid, release tension and resume more rested, healed and skin is more youthful, with a smooth appearance. Each waveform delivers a specific electromagnetic field that can be used independently or in combination to offer a wide range of personalized and sustainable skin treatments.
A microcurrent facial uses a microcurrent device to stimulate your facial muscles for a natural lift and tone.
Microcurrent machines in facial aesthetic applications are used to ‘work out’ the muscles of the face, stimulate collagen, and tighten skin appearance.
Microcurrent uses low-voltage electricity to stimulate muscle.
Microcurrent stimulates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) cell growth which is the source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level. It’s an energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things. ATP captures chemical energy obtained from the breakdown of food molecules and releases it to fuel other cellular processes. ATP is the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells. It is often referred to as the energy currency of the cell and can be compared to “storing money in a bank.”
Microcurrent has been shown to improve collagen development in the dermis on the face.
Microcurrent facials tighten and smooth the muscles and connective tissues in the face by increasing cellular activity, and have been shown to reduce wrinkles, mostly around the forehead area.

Microcurrent Electrical Therapy (MET) and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) are both types of electrical stimulation therapies used for pain management. The main difference between TENS therapy and MET therapy is the level of electrical current used. A microcurrent device uses an electric current with an amplitude that is 1,000 times lower than that of TENS.
Microcurrent treatment can be either felt just faintly or not at all. Unlike TENS, there will also be no tensing or spasming of the muscles in the area of treatment.
Microcurrent treatment has been studied for a range of painful conditions. Tension headache, acute knee pain, osteoarthritis, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), tennis elbow, chronic back pain.
Microcurrents employ electricity at a low amplitude and frequencies of 0.5-10Hz. These frequency and amplitude combinations are closely in line with the electrical activity of the cells of the body. Microcurrent therapy helps to heal wounds, repair injuries, improve surgery recovery, improve energy and pain in fibromyalgia, and improve the pain associated with arthritis and other painful conditions. Research has also shown that microcurrent treatment can help prevent muscle loss and preserve muscle function.
WHERE CAN MICROCURRENT BE USED?
There are over 32 muscles in the face and Microcurrent can be used to stimulate those muscles. There is no muscle contraction. The muscle is woken up, and the current reminds it where it used to be and muscle memory is reactivated.
Used over time, the muscles are re-educated to resume their place for a perky and plumper look. You can work with micro-current at home or in a professional facial. Check out these results on my Instagram.
The Metawave™ modalities are combined in a cohesive manner, creating a unique facial experience. Perfect for aging skin with both loose skin and muscles. If you’re using an at-home device use it only for a few minutes 2x a week. If you’re starting to notice more falling of the muscles, it could be you need some fascia release first to release tightness and adhesions. Then work up to microcurrent.
