Warming Foods For A Seasonal Glow
As temperatures drop it's the perfect time to cozy up with a warming drink. Replenish with lots of hydration, and gentle warming foods. Our bodies intrinsically know what it needs and right now it's craving warmth and comfort. Warming foods increase blood flow to your gut and improve digestion. The first step in healing your gut and skin is to make sure that your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs through a diet including a variety of seasonal colored plant foods and high quality fats. In conjunction with quality treatments and professional skincare products you will see and feel the results quickly.
I advise my clients to stay away from juicing and eating too many cold foods like salads or sipping smoothies this time a year. Autumn and Winter is definitely not the time and raw food typically is very hard to digest anyway. They can seriously slow down the metabolism (which is already slow because of the cold weather) and cause a variety of symptoms. Most juices and smoothies also contain fruit which can spike sugar levels. Maintaining proper glucose levels for cell repair and improving acne and gaining clear skin has a lot to do with blood sugar and insulin (among other things.) The other problem is how much fiber is left after the processing to keep taste but also the nutrition in tact.
Fiber and fluids are the two things needed to keep waste moving out of the body. There are two types of fiber; soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is found in foods like oats, rye, barley, flax meal, chia seeds, and some fruits and vegetables. This type helps us to feel satisfied after eating, and has the special ability to bind to substances and slow their absorption (sugars and fats), or can bind to substances helping them to be excreted (hormones and cholesterol). Soluble fiber is especially important when it comes to skin health. We need this fiber to help our body move excess hormones out of our system, and keep your skin healthy and clear!
From a Chinese medicine perspective certain foods are classified according to its attributes and the way it effects the balance of energy in the body. They affect our internal temperature by heating and invigorating the body during the digestion process. Warm drinks have the same principle. You want blood to flow to your digestive tract, to help facilitate healthy and efficient digestion and carry out waste easily. Warm liquids open up channels and encourage flow. Definitely, stay away from iced drinks all year round. When the temperature is hot warm drinks actually reduces overall body heat and keeps you cooler. If you have inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea and eczema. Think warm to stay cool and put out that fire internally and externally! Give my Golden Milk recipe a try. It’s one of my favorites to to comfort me during cold and flu season. Help my gut to feel soothed, aid in my beauty sleep and ease away any anxiety.
I'm a big advocate in bringing your diet into balance and aiding digestion to provide the greatest use of nutrients from the foods we eat to achieve radiant skin and health. When trying to integrate any new principles into your diet or skincare regimen it's always best to consult a professional to find out how this applies to you, especially if you are experiencing digestive issues and skin breakouts.
